Low Power SMD Converters Target Critical Medical Designs

RECOM has introduced SMD versions for its recently released 3.5 W, 5 W and 6 W medical-grade DC/DC modules. All key features required for critical medical applications are now available for SMD designs. The REM3.5E, REM5E and REM6E series of medical-grade regulated DC/DC converters now come with either pins or SMD. They feature reinforced 250 VAC continuous working isolation with >8mm creepage/clearance providing 2xMOPP and qualify for medical B, BF and CF applications due to their very low 1 μA leakage current. The reinforced insulation of up to 10 kVDC is sufficient for virtually every medical application.

These compact SMD packages have tightly regulated single or dual outputs with UVLO, SCP, OCP and OVP. The modules operate at above 80% efficiency in a wide temperature range from -40°C up to +85°C without derating. They are UL marked and certified to CB, IEC, EN and ANSI/AAMI 60601 3rd ed. Safety and 4th ed. EMC medical standards.

Low-Cost, Open Frame Power Supplies Provide 40 W and 60 W

XP Power has launched two new series of low-profile, open-frame power supplies addressing the need for low-cost 40 W and 60 W solutions that support a broad range of applications within the medical, domestic/household and ITE/industrial sectors. Most markets are under price pressure these days; the new FCS40 and FCS60 address this need by combining low unit cost with easy integration into multiple end equipment markets with international agency approvals, high efficiency and low emissions. This is further supported by the wide operating temperature (-25°C to +70°C) that allows use in a wide variety of environments.

The new FCS40 and FCS60 supplies offer a single output of either 12 V, 15 V, 18 V, 24 V, 36 V or 48 V at efficiencies up to 86%, model-dependant. An on-board potentiometer allows the voltage to be trimmed by ±10%, optimizing the voltage for specific load requirements or voltage drops. Both the FCS40 and FCS60 carry extensive approvals that ease the task of the designer in obtaining system-level approval for their designs. For medical applications these include IEC/EN/ES60601 offering 2 x Means of Patient Protection (MOPP). The units also include two-line input fuses and offer Class II operation, furthering their suitability for medical applications in the home healthcare environment.

For ITE and industrial applications the supplies are approved to IEC60950-1 and IEC/EN/cUL62368-1 as well as meeting the needs of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). IEC60335-1 approval makes the FCS40 and FCS60 applicable to domestic & household applications. As part of XP Power’s “Green Power” range, all of the new supplies minimize the no load power consumption to less than 0.3W, facilitating compliance with the latest environmental legislation. The ability to be convection cooled up to +70°C with de-rating removes the need for a fan from many systems, saving energy, cost and weight as well as improving system reliability.

Medical External Power Supplies Meet Efficiency Standards

TDK has announced the introduction of the TDK-Lambda medical certified DTM65-D external power supplies. This series meets the stringent DoE Level VI and EU Tier 2 v5 standards for efficiency and off-load power. The DTM65-D is certified to the medical IEC 60601-1 standards, making it suitable for a variety of hospital, dental and healthcare applications, including diagnostic and monitoring equipment.

The convection-cooled DTM65-D is housed in a rugged, vent-free enclosure, measuring 132 mm x 69 mm x 40 mm (L x W x H). AC is applied through the standard IEC 60320-C14 (3-prong) socket and the output DC cable is fitted with a 4-pin Power-DIN connector as standard, withother connector types available upon request. The adapters also feature over-voltage and over-current protection.

Accepting a 90 VAC to 264 VAC input, the 40 W to 65 W adapters are available with 5 V, 12 V, 15 V, 19 V, 24 V, 28 V, 36 V and 48 V outputs and can operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -20 to +60°C (derating linearly to 50% load from 40 to 60°C). In addition to satisfying DoE Level VI and EU Tier 2 v5 requirements with an average efficiency of greater than 89% (>87.3% for the 5 V model), the power supplies have an off-load power consumption of less than 0.15 W.

The DTM65-D series has been certified to ANSI/AAMI ES 60601-1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60601-1-08, IEC/EN 60601-1, and carries the CE mark for the Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS2 Directives. All models meet IEC60601-1-2 Ed4:2014, EN55011 Class B, FCC Part 18 Class B emissions and immunity standards. Input to ground isolation is 1,500 VAC (1 x MoPP), input to output 4,000 VAC (2 x MoPP), output to ground 1,500 VAC (1 x MoPP), with a touch current of <100µA and a leakage current of less than 300 µA. All models are suitable for BF rated equipment and can be operated up to an altitude of 5,000 m.
