Renesas Extends its RISC-V Processing Line with a New Voice Control ASSP

Written by Stephen Vicinanza

Renesas extends its RISC-V processing line with a new voice control ASSP. Just a few days ago Renesas announced its first RISC-V Microcontroller targeting voice-controlled HMI (human-machine interface) systems.

The new R9A06G150 32-bit ASSP was developed with the RISC-V ecosystem team, providing a cost-effective production-ready voice control system solution. The MCU eliminates the need for upfront software investment and the need for RISC-V toolsets.

The MCUs will be aimed at commercial and residential building automation, including toys, home appliances, as well as keyword voice recognition for building or apartment complex operations. The foundation of this turn-key solution is reprogramming using specialized application code developed by independent design houses. This method was designed to bring the development of client designs to volume production quicker, more cost-effectively, and at a higher overall functionality.

“Renesas continues to broaden our RISC-V MCU/MPU offering, in this case by delivering designers an innovative voice-command HMI with pre-developed software that shortens development time and time to market,” said Roger Wendelken, Senior Vice President in Renesas’ IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit. “Through close collaboration with the RISC-V partner ecosystem, this flexible, scalable ASSP solution allows customers interested in voice control to support different application classes on the same MCU hardware platform.”

Key features

  • 100MHz CPU and DSP instructions, cost-optimized specifications, and floating point optimization
  • Compatible with less expensive microphones and outputs
  • Controlled by an external host I/F via SCI/UART, I3C or I2C and SPI
  • QSPI interface for memory expansion
  • Small package support for cost and integration effectiveness (QFN 48, 32, 24)
  • Specialized audio PDM & SSI I/F for a more seamless connection to audio codecs and microphones
  • Low power consumption, for energy savings, and optimal environmental impact.
