Laird Connectivity has added to its portfolio with the Summit System on a Module (SoM) 8M Plus, a highly integrated and comprehensive software and hardware solution. The SoM combines NXP multi-core processing, with dual-band 2×2 Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
With the Summit SoM 8M Plus, laird has developed its most versatile, feature-rich, and secure wireless solution yet. This computing system is perfect for serving as the core platform of advanced connected applications and audio/voice systems.
The basis for this powerful SoM is an NXP Semiconductor i.MX 8M Plus processor, and an 88W8997 wireless SoC. The summit SoM 8M Plus is a versatile, power-efficient quad-core Cortex-A53 and Cortex-M7 solution for heterogeneous multiprocessing, and advanced connectivity. The enhanced security enables high performance and flexible solutions all around. Developers are able to leverage the hardware acceleration for machine learning with an integrated 2.3 TOPS neural processing unit and a wide range of multimedia (graphics, video, audio, and vision) with the DSP core and GPU.
The Summit SoM 8M Plus provides manufacturers with the ability to refresh Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity multiple times through a product’s lifecycle in order to future-proof designs without sacrificing size or space. At the same time, the SoM solution speeds up the time to market and lowers the cost of ownership, independent of application use, or in an overall reduction of costs.
There are a variety of interfaces that includes support for up to three displays, video out options, camera, audio, and I/O. The onboard cortex-A53 and Cortex-M7 cores allow for simultaneous Linus and RTOS executions on dedicated, firewalled subsystems. The quad-core i.MX 8M Plus SoC is powerful enough to run multiple instances of Linux for a number of purposes, including user interface and connectivity and many more.
Availability of the Summit SOM 8M Plus modules will be in the future, as NXP updates their 2×2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo silicon to the latest standards. Additionally, the i.MX 8M Plus processor is backed by NXPs Product Longevity Program, which ensures long-term availability of 15 plus years.
