Espressif Systems has announced that its ESP32-H2 MCU has been granted the official “Thread Interoperability Certificate”, which ensures that ESP32-H2 has passed the all the necessary tests for compliance and interoperability with market-leading, Thread-reference implementations. Additionally, ESP32-H2 has been certified as a “Zigbee-Compliant Platform”, according to the relevant certification issued by CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance). Therefore, it has been formally acknowledged that ESP32-H2 provides users with rigorously-tested Thread and Zigbee solutions.
ESP32-H2 comes with integrated IEEE 802.15.4 radio and Bluetooth 5 (LE) connectivity from a 32-bit RISC-V core that can be clocked up to 96 MHz. Furthermore, ESP32-H2 achieves state-of-the-art RF performance, low power consumption, and unrivalled security for smart-connected devices. What’s more, ESP32-H2 supports Thread and Zigbee low-power mesh networks based on IEEE 802.15.4, as well as Bluetooth LE point-to-point broadcast, and Bluetooth mesh networks.
On top of that, ESP32-H2 supports Matter, which is an industry-unifying, IP-based connectivity protocol. This enables users to complete commissioning via Bluetooth LE, and initiate the communication between their devices via Thread. Thus, users can build IoT devices that can be seamlessly integrated into different ecosystems, with minimal effort, as shown in this YouTube video. With ESP32-H2 in its portfolio, Espressif now offers the full spectrum of Matter solutions for end-products with Wi-Fi or Thread connectivity, as well as for Thread Border Routers/Zigbee gateways using a combination of Espressif SoCs.
ESP32-H2 supports Thread version 1.x and Zigbee 3.x. That said, Espressif, as an active CSA member that has joined the Matter program since its inception, will continue to develop and support the Matter protocol on ESP32-H2 for as long as the standard progresses. It is worth mentioning that ESP32-H2 is supported through Espressif’s mature IoT Development Framework (ESP-IDF), which has added the Thread SDK to help users build ESP32-H2 applications easily.
