Beacon Features its i.MX 8M Plus SoM with an NPU Onboard

Written by Stephen Vicinanza

Beacon EmbeddedWorks features its i.MX 8M Plus SoM with an NPU onboard. The System on Module (SoM) is now in stock, and further expands the company’s i.MX 8M SoM family of boards.

This SoM delivers greater processing power, than previous models, and reliable connectivity that includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), and a Cadence Tensilica HiFi 4 DSP. The module also supports the latest version of Bluetooth 5.3 and 802.11 ac.

These SoMs stand out due to higher security measures, power efficiency, and high-definition graphics and video processing. The system is built around the NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor containing up to four ARM Cortex-A53 cores that run up to 1.8GHz processing speed.

There multiple configurations available and there is a level of quality that raises the SoMs above other less powerful and versatile modules. The embedded technology design, development, and ongoing support is a time-consuming process at best. The complexities speak for themselves, in all areas of embedded systems.

Now with the advent of the Neural Processing Unit, complexities are getting even deeper. Beacon is hoping to position itself as a custom SoM solution manufacturer, in a now tightening field of SoM developers. They are bringing to the table expertise in the custom wireless offerings, from expert engineers, that include Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 5, and even cellular options.

The company is also offering high-performance application development kits. Beacon offers expert development and design help in choosing an SoM for a client project. Their team of highly trained engineers will offer support for SoM choice, and integration options in product design and develop a customized module to meet the needs of the application.

The company is also offering late-stage product support, for areas other companies do not provide for like obsolescence management. It also provides support in areas that include any stage of the product lifecycle. The support packages that are offered are maintained at the broad support package (BSP) level and include the latest versions of Linux, RTOSs, and Android operating systems.
