AC-DC power supplies are of fundamental importance to the embedded systems they power. Vendors continue to innovate and improve power supplies and converters to meet the demands of multiple industries, including requirements such as miniature form factors or rugged durability and efficient cooling in wide temperature ranges. The products selected for this month’s Datasheet are just a small sample of these recent innovations.

The AI revolution will never arrive without power. If I produced power supplies for embedded systems, that would be my tagline. That kernel of marketing brilliance aside, it remains true that power has a major influence on the size, cooling, and mobility of any system, and thus AC-DC power supplies are critical to the design and functioning of embedded technology. So while the limelight has long since been stolen by flashy new chips built for Artificial-Intelligience-of-Things (AIoT) at the edge, vendors persist in producing ever more efficient and compact AC-DC power supplies to meet the needs of those flashy chips and the rapidly evolving market.
Hence this month’s gallery of the latest in AC-DC power supplies. No single trend captures the latest from these companies. Many products are geared toward providing wide operating temperature ranges, including in still-air environments. In line with this, many manufacturers emphasize their device’s cooling methods and efficiency. Others have smaller aspirations: literally, designed to fit ultra-compact systems. Durability, safe isolation, and of course wide voltage ranges are other common concerns on the following pages. And in a space full of niche, industry-focused design, many vendors have opted instead to make their power supplies as flexible and wide-reaching as possible.

Efficient, Ultra-Narrow Power Supply Module for Industrial and Civil Applications
Aimtec’s AMESP500U-277JZ series is a 500W AC-DC power supply offering a wide commercial input voltage range of 85-305VAC, and output ranges from 5-55V. This enclosed, ultra-narrow, semi-potted module is fanless, highly efficient, and consumes very little power. Plus, it delivers an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C with full power up to 50°C, and it features a safe isolation of 4,000VAC. With an operating altitude of 5,000m, an MTBF of 200,000h, output short circuit protection (OSCP), output over-current protection (OCP), and output over-voltage protection (OVP), the AMESP500U-277JZ is ideal for industrial and street lighting controls, communication, grid power, civil applications, and instrumentation.

Ultra-Miniature Modular Switching Power Supply Series
The MCA-10 from Astrodyne TDI is a 10W ultra-miniature modular switching power supply series. The series offers single, dual, and triple output options. With a universal 90 to 26VAC input with 3.3VDC to 24VDC outputs, these tiny converters provide 3,000VAC input to output isolation and come in PCB, chassis, and DIN rail mount packages.
Cincon’s CBM70S, one of the latest in the company’s CBM series, is a part of its broader AC-DC modular brick power family—described on Cincon’s website as a standard brick type with a low profile down to 0.5” and suitable for applications requiring a limited component height. It features a baseplate-cooling design to provide improved heat dissipation, and is water- and dustproof. The CBM70S can be easily mounted on and integrated with your system board.

A Converter for Space-Constrained, Low-Power Applications
CUI Inc.’s PSK-60D internal AC-DC power supply offers a 5VDC to 48VDC output voltage range, 150mVp-p maximum ripple and noise rating, and up to 91% efficiency. With a 60W maximum output power rating, this device provides a variety of protections such as output short-circuit, overcurrent, and overvoltage. The PSK-60D is suitable for space-constrained, low-power ITE applications, and industrial and consumer electronics. There is also a 40W option, the PSK40-D (specifications below are for the 60W power supply).

Enhanced Heat Dissipation in this Enclosed Power Supply
MEAN WELL’s LRS-150 is a 150W single-output enclosed type power supply with 30mm of low-profile design. You can switch between 115 and 230VAC inputs, and the entire series provides an output voltage line of 12, 15, 24, 36 and 48V. With a high efficiency of up to 90%, its metallic mesh case design better enables heat dissipation such that the whole series can operate in temperatures ranging from -30 to 70°C under air convection without a fan. It delivers an extremely low no-load power consumption (less than 0.5W), allowing the end system to easily meet worldwide energy requirements.
A Power Supply Ready For Harsh Industrial Environments
Murata Power Solutions’ BAC1 isolated 1W regulated single-output AC-DC converter series have a wide, industrial operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, including still air, and thus supporting operating in the most demanding environments. It provides a 5VAC to 305VAC, 70VDC to 400VDC input voltage range and single-output voltages of 5V, 12V, or 24V. The BAC1 is board-mounted, and comes in a 6-pin SIP package. Further, it features ultra-low standby power consumption (20mW). This power supply is suited for LED lighting, sensing, smart building, and metering applications.

RECOM Power’s RACM30-K/277 30W Single/Dual Output AC-DC Modules offer a full load power temperature range of -40°C to +60°C, with a reduced load rating of +90°C. These AC-DC modules deliver a thermally effective power yield of 9.2W per cubic inch at +60°C still air for continuous loads of 30W plus additional peak capability. RACM30-K/277 modules are safety rated as LPS limited power source and OVC III for an operating altitude of up to 5000m. The temperature range of RACM30-K/277 modules from RECOM Power makes them ideal for medical MOPP applications and household and industrial markets.
TDK-Lambda’s CUS250M series 2” x 4” 250W power supplies have a mechanical configuration that enables both convection and conduction cooling through the baseplate to provide silent cooling. The CUS250M series is available in 12V and 24V output voltages. The output can be adjusted to accommodate non-standard voltages. The CUS250M operates from an 85 VAC to 264 VAC input and has a low earth leakage current of less than 150µA, including all tolerances. The CUS250M can provide up to 250W in -20°C to +50°C ambient temperatures when conduction cooled without external air. Applications include medical, home healthcare, dental, test, measurement, broadcast, professional audio, and industrial equipment.

The ASB160 series from XP Power is a range of complete low-profile, full-brick, baseplate-cooled AC-DC power supplies that require no external components.
