Renesas is sampling 22nm MCU, which has higher performance and low power. In a move to reach state-of-the-art process technology, Renesas has developed a 22nm microcontroller (MCU) and are saying it is the only one of its kind.
The company is providing customers with a lower power consumption while offering higher performance. The lower power comes from reduced core voltages. The advanced process technology also allows for richer feature sets, which include functions like RF. The die area is reduced because of the reduction in size due to the advanced process node. The resulting chips are higher in the integration of peripherals and memory, yet smaller chip size overall.
The first chips to be produced are extensions of the RA family of 32-bit ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers. The MCU is wireless and delivers Bluetooth 5.3 Low Energy (LE) with the integration of software-defined radio.
The company is saying it is future-proof technology whereby customers can build products with long lifecycles. There can be device upgrades to the latest application software, and new Bluetooth capabilities, whether in development or already deployed products. This ensures compliance with the latest specification versions.
“Renesas’ MCU leadership is based on a wide array of products and manufacturing process technologies,” said Roger Wendelken, Senior Vice President in Renesas’ IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit. “We are pleased to announce the first 22-nm product development in the RA MCU family which will pave the way for next-generation devices that will help customers to future-proof their design while ensuring long-term availability. We are committed to providing the best performance, ease of use, and the latest features on the market. This advancement is only the beginning.”
There are full-featured Bluetooth LE previous releases that can be leveraged by designers and developers, so that end product manufacturers’ needs are met.
