Dev Tools Extend Transportation Safety Standards Coverage

IAR Systems has updated the functional safety editions of the leading embedded development toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench with new functional safety certificates. The new certificates add the standard EN 50657:2017 “Railways Applications – Rolling stock applications – Software on Board Rolling Stock” as well as a later revision of the “Road vehicles – Functional safety” standard called ISO 26262:2018.

Functional safety is one of the most important features in many embedded systems and companies must consider development tools as an integral part of the system certification, says IAR Systems. The proof of compliance for the tools increases cost and time of development. To solve this problem, IAR Systems provides certified versions of the complete compiler and debugger toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm, Renesas RX, Renesas RL78 and Renesas RH850.

The build chains of IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm, RX, RL78 and RH850 have been tested and approved according to the requirements on support tools put forth in the international umbrella standard for functional safety IEC 61508, the standard for automotive safety-related systems ISO 26262, and the the European railway standard EN 50128 and EN 50657. For Arm, RX and RL78, the certification also covers IEC 62304, defining the life cycle requirements for medical device software.

The quality assurance measures applied by IAR Systems and the included Safety Manual allow application developers to use the tools in safety-related software development for each Safety Integrity Level (SIL) according to IEC 61508 and each Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) of ISO 26262. IAR Embedded Workbench is certified by TÜV SÜD.

IAR Embedded Workbench provides a complete IDE including the IAR C/C++ Compiler and the C-SPY Debugger. The code analysis tools C-RUN® and C-STAT® add static and runtime analysis, enabling complete code control through the entire development cycle. Thanks to the complete integration of the tools in the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE, developers get up and running quickly with the analysis.

IAR Systems also offers a Functional Safety Support and Update Agreement with guaranteed support for the sold version for the longevity of the contract. In addition to prioritized technical support, the agreement includes access to validated service packs and regular reports of known deviations and problems.

Rugged COMe Board Sports Ryzen Embedded V1000/R1000 SoC

MEN Micro has announced the CB71C, a rugged COM Express module for rail, public transportation and industry applications.  The module is 100% compatible with the COM Express Type 6 pin-out and conforms to the VITA 59 standard, which specifies robust mechanics to ensure reliable operation under the harsh environmental conditions.
The CB71C Rugged COM Express Module can be equipped with the new Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC in addition to the Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoC. The new AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC features a Radeon Vega graphics engine with three compute units and support for up to three displays with a resolution of up to 4k without additional graphics hardware. With up to four “Zen” processor cores, when using the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 SoC, the CB71C is also suitable for virtualization.

The module provides passive cooling and a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C are possible with the low-power versions. The CB71C can be equipped with up to 32 GB directly soldered DDR4 main memory and a 16 GB eMMC. PCI Express 3.0, DDI (DP, eDP, HDMI), SATA 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 are available as high-speed interfaces.

The COM module has a board management controller with monitoring functions and a trusted platform module. The module also uses the Secure Memory Encryption capability in the AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC. That feature is essential for security-critical applications such as payment and ticketing terminals, fleet management or monitoring, according to MEN Micro.

Rugged Touch Panel Computer Targets Railway System Designs

ADLINK Technology has released its latest Driver Machine Interface (DMI) touch panel computer, the DMI-1210, designed specifically for train control and driver information display. Powered by the Intel Atom x5-E3930 processor (formerly Apollo Lake) and featuring a 12.1” (4:3) high resolution color display, 5-wire resistive touch screen and securable I/O interface, the DMI-1210 can be deployed as an HMI unit for driver’s desks, control panel for passenger information systems, surveillance system control/display unit or in railway diagnostics and communications applications.
The DMI-1210 is an EN 50155 certificated, cost-effective, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) driver interface that offers train radio display, electronic timetable, and diagnostic display functions and additional functionality such as train data recorder. Modular DIN Rail Box PC Targets Transportation Systems

MEN Micro has announced the MC50M, a modular DIN rail box PC for embedded applications in transportation. The computer platform is based on Intel’s Atom E3900 CPU series. This makes the MC50M the ideal basis for functions such as security gateway, predictive maintenance, CCTV, ticketing systems or as a diagnostic server.

The MC50M can be used as a stand-alone product or in combination with a range of pre-fabricated extension modules, providing additional features and short delivery times. Extension modules can provide application-specific functions such as wireless communication (LTE advanced, WLAN, GNSS), MVB, CAN bus or other I/Os. A removable storage shuttle supports the integration of one to two 2.5″ SATA hard disks/SSDs. The wide range PSU allows isolated power supply from 24 V DC to 110 V DC nominal and extends the entire system to EN 50155 compliance.

The board management controller provides increased reliability and reduces downtime. The Trusted Platform Module supports security and encryption features. With the ignition switch for remote startup and shutdown control, the platform provides additional energy saving features. The aluminum housing with cooling fins ensures conductive cooling and fanless operation. The MC50M has no moving parts, so it can be operated maintenance-free.

The long-term availability of 15 years from product launch minimizes life cycle management by making the MC50M available for at least this period. MEN’s DIN rail concept is designed for flexible configuration of module combinations and is suitable for embedded IoT applications in various markets. The CPU modules can be flexibly combined with various expansion modules and power supplies.

In the modular system, the data transfer between the individual modules as well as the power supply of the components is implemented via the expansion connectors standardized by MEN.The concept specifications include housing dimensions, mounting, cooling and IP protection. In addition, the expansion connectors and their pin assignment are defined. DIN rail mounting (35 mm) is standard. Wall and 19” rack mounting is possible using adaption brackets.

Secure Cellular Router Serves Industrial and Transportation Needs

Digi International has announced the Digi WR54, a rugged, secure, high-performance wireless router for complex mobile and industrial environments. With dual cellular interfaces, Digi WR54 provides immediate carrier failover for near-constant uptime and continuous connectivity, especially as vehicles move throughout a city or for locations with marginal cellular coverage. ESF 6.0 Release Enhances Edge-to-Cloud Connectivity

Eurotech has announced the new 6.0 release of its Everyware Software Framework (ESF). The new version aims to enhance the IoT edge framework’s edge and cloud connectivity capability. ESF provides IoT connectivity to many leading cloud platforms, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Cumulocity IoT, Eurotech Everyware Cloud and Eclipse Kapua. With the new 6.0 release the user is now able to specify multiple cloud connections, each to a different Endpoint, ensuring a better portability of applications. This makes connection configuration and switching among cloud providers easier and code-free.

The new release also broadens the range of ESF’s natively supported field protocols. Users developing applications in industrial automation, transportation, automotive, energy and other industries will have a wide range of edge connectivity options to communicate with their field assets.

Fanless Railway Embedded Computer is EN50155-Certified

Kontron has expanded its TRACe family of operational computers designed specifically for the railway market. The Kontron TRACe-B40x-TR, an EN50155 certified fanless generic platform, features the latest Intel Atom E3900 series processors and 6th Generation Intel Core processors. The first released variant is the Kontron TRACe-B404-TR, based on the Intel Atom x5-E3940 quad-core at 1.6 GHz high performance per watt processor, with 8 GB DDR3L memory and 32 GB SLC eMMC Flash. Other variants will be made available later, based on Intel Atom x7-E3950 quad-core at 1.6 GHz, Intel Core i3-6100U, or Intel Core i7-6600U processors when higher performance is needed.

Kontron TRACe-B40x-TR has two independent networks (2x LAN with M12 connectors). It comes with an ultra-wide range power supply (from 24 VDC to 110 VDC nominal input voltage range, including tolerance range of +/- 40% required according to EN 50155, meaning a voltage range between 144 VDC and 154 VDC) adapted to all types of railway vehicles from light rail vehicles to high speed trains.

The front plate operational connectors are electrically insulated in compliance to EN50155 standard with lockable M12 connectors. The rear plate hosts standard connectors (display port, USB 3.0/2.0, serial line) for maintenance purposes and is protected from dust and water during operations with a cover plate. Thanks to its modularity, the TRACe-B40x-TR product also accommodates several optional wireless interfaces (such as Wi-Fi, 4G/LTE, and GNSS), field busses (RS422/485, CAN, MVB, and others), SATA devices (up to two 2.5’-inch SSD) and/or additional optional I/Os (such as DIOs, Audio, and USB) to match any railway applications such as on-board CCTV, entertainment/infotainment PIS or TCMS. DC-DC Converter Family Adds Tighter Voltage Regulation

Vicor has added 25 new products to its family of DC-DC converter modules (DCMs) with tighter output voltage regulation of ±1%. With high power densities of 1,032 W/inches-squared, the new series allows engineers to drive loads requiring tighter regulation with minimal additional circuitry or downstream components.

The DCM ChiP (Converter housed in Package) is a DC-DC converter module that operates from an unregulated, wide range input to generate an isolated, regulated DC output. With its high frequency zero-voltage switching (ZVS) topology, the DCM converter consistently delivers high efficiency across its entire input voltage range.

The new DCMs are used broadly across defense and industrial applications that require tighter output voltage regulation. These applications include UAV, ground vehicle, radar, transportation and industrial controls. The DCM ChiPs are available in M-grade, which can perform at temperatures as low as -55°C.

Compact Apollo-Lake Box PC Targets Mobile Comms

MEN Micro has announced its BC51M box PC based on the Intel Atom E3900 series, optionally with two or four cores, up to 1.6 GHz. The fanless and maintenance-free device is used in graphics and memory intensive applications in trains, buses or commercial vehicles and, thanks to its numerous communication interfaces, is highly variable.

With 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM memory, a rear accessible SD card, an integrated eMMC memory and an optional SATA HDD/SSD, the box PC has the necessary storage capacity for entertainment servers or video surveillance systems.  The BC51M was designed for mobile use in trains, buses or commercial vehicles and takes over wireless on-board functions such as Internet on board, positioning via GNSS, entertainment or predictive maintenance.

The box PC supports up to two DisplayPort interfaces with a maximum resolution of 4K, as well as two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, one USB 2.0, one HD audio and two variable connections for serial I/O, CAN bus, MVB or IBIS. Two PCI Express Mini Card slots and two micro-SIM slots provide flexibility in implementing mobile service standards up to 4G LTE or WLAN. Vehicle Computer Targets Comms + Control

MEN Micro has announced the BC50R, a maintenance-free box computer that has been designed for data acquisition applications in rugged environments in vehicles such as trains, commercial vehicles, mobile machines or ships. All interfaces are implemented on rugged M12 connectors (USB, digital input and output, Gigabit Ethernet, CAN and legacy serial I/O). The housing is compliant to the IP65 protection class.

On the inside, the system offers two PCI Express Mini card slots with two SIM card slots for WLAN, GNSS or 3G/4G functionality. The necessary antenna connectors can be made available at the front panel. It is powered by an AMD Embedded G-Series APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), the T48N, running at 1.4 GHz. The use of the Embedded G-Series makes for high scalability in CPU (single/dual core) performance. The BC50R is equipped with 2 GB of DDR3 SDRAM and offers SD card and mSATA slots. The system is designed for fanless operation at temperatures from -40 to +70°C (+85°C for up to 10 minutes), its special aluminum housing with cooling fins serves as a heat sink for the internal electronics and in this way provides conduction cooling.

The BC50R supports a 24 VDC and 36 VDC nom. class S2 power supply in compliance with EN 50155 or power supplies which comply with ISO 7637-2 (E-mark for automotive) (nominal input voltage 24 V) or with EN 60945 (ship). The power can be switched on and off using an ignition signal on the power connector, and a shutdown-delay time after switching off the power can be adjusted by software.

The combination of the various CPU/GPU options with the available selection of external interfaces (realized via separate graphics and I/O interface boards within the system) makes for an flexible system design that can quickly be tailored to a wide variety of applications.
