PMICs Enable Optimized Power for Automotive ADAS

Maxim Integrated Products has announced a series of power-management ICs (PMICs)  that enable designers to optimize power for automotive advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) functions to achieve high performance, small size, efficiency and electrical protection.

ADAS functions, many of which are now mandatory or will be soon, increase vehicle safety and enhance the driving experience. These features include smart braking for collision avoidance, GPS/navigation, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, lane-departure warning, and back-up/surround video. Although these functions receive considerable design attention, managing DC power in electrically harsh vehicle environments is a less-publicized yet critical challenge which involves significant issues of functions, features, performance, efficiency and footprint.
Maxim’s array of application-optimized ICs, which manage DC power, solve the top-level designer pain points for various ADAS functions involving a combination of package size, operating efficiency, quiescent current, electrical protection, and EMI generation.

The series of PMICs which Maxim has released include:

MAX20019 Dual Synchronous Step-Down Converter—Provides the industry’s smallest 3.2MHz dual step-down power supply in a 2mm × 3mm package size (compared to the closest competing solutions that offer single channel parts in either a 2mm x 2mm or 3mm x 3mm package size)

MAX20087 Quad Camera Power Protector—ASIL-grade camera module protector IC includes an I2C interface to report on over/undervoltage/fault conditions; monitors up to four 600 mA coax channels and isolates faults from individual camera modules

MAX20075 and MAX20076 Synchronous Step-Down Converters—Offer the industry’s lowest quiescent current with peak and valley mode options; provide a high peak efficiency of 91% for always-on applications compared to competing solutions, while featuring a 40 V load-dump tolerance

MAX20014 Triple-Output Converter—Features one synchronous boost and two synchronous step-down converters for smaller, simpler, and lower cost designs (competing approaches require two ICs plus discrete components); features 2.2 MHz switching frequency and spread-spectrum capability for reduced EMI and comes in a small 4 mm x 4 mm package size

Multiphase PMICs Boast High Efficiency and Small Footprint

Renesas Electronics has announced three programmable power management ICs (PMICs) that offer high power efficiency and small footprint for application processors in smartphones and tablets: the ISL91302B, ISL91301A, and ISL91301B PMICs. The PMICs also deliver power to artificial intelligence (AI) processors, FPGAs and industrial microprocessors (MPUs). They are also well-suited for powering the supply rails in solid-state drives (SSDs), optical transceivers, and a wide range of consumer, industrial and networking devices. The ISL91302B dual/single output, multiphase PMIC provides up to 20 A of output current and 94 percent peak efficiency in a 70 mm2 solution size that is more than 40% smaller than competitive PMICs.
In addition to the ISL91302B, Renesas’ ISL91301A triple output PMIC and ISL91301B quad output PMIC both deliver up to 16 A of output power with 94% peak efficiency. The new programmable PMICs leverage Renesas’ R5 Modulation Technology to provide fast single-cycle transient response, digitally tuned compensation, and ultra-high 6 MHz (max) switching frequency during load transients. These features make it easier for power supply designers to design boards with 2 mm x 2 mm, 1mm low profile inductors, small capacitors and only a few passive components.

Renesas PMICs also do not require external compensation components or external dividers to set operating conditions. Each PMIC dynamically changes the number of active phases for optimum efficiency at all output currents. Their low quiescent current, superior light load efficiency, regulation accuracy, and fast dynamic response significantly extend battery life for today’s feature-rich, power hungry devices.

    • Dual-phase (2 + 2) configuration supporting 10 A from each output
    • Triple-phase (3 + 1) configuration supporting 15 A from one output and  5A from the second output

  • Integrated telemetry ADC senses phase currents, output current, input/output voltages, and die temperature, enabling PMIC diagnostics during operation
  • Soft-start and fault protection against under voltage (UV), over voltage (OV), over current (OC), over temperature (OT), and short circuit

Compact Power Management ICs Boast Low Standby Power

Maxim Integrated Products.offers a pair of power management ICs (PMICs) aimed at designers of Bluetooth headphones, activity monitors, smart garments, smartwatches, and other size-constrained devices where battery life and efficiency are priorities.

Maxim 9065

The MAX77650 and MAX77651 feature single inductor multiple output (SIMO) buck-boost regulators that provide three independently programmable power rails from a single inductor, 150mA LDO, and three current sink drivers to reduce overall component count and maximize available board space. For design flexibility, the MAX77650 operates up to 3.3V and the MAX77651 operates up to 5V—both include an analog multiplexer (MUX) output for safe battery monitoring, making them ideal for low-power designs.

Size is critical for hearables and wearables as they continue moving to smaller form factors. Most PMICs for these small, lithium-ion battery-operated devices require additional components, such as boost, buck, and low dropout (LDO) regulators; a charger; and current regulators for LED indicators. For space-savings and efficiency, Maxim has integrated all these functions into a complete power solution that is only 19.2mm2—less than 1/2 the size of existing component combinations.
