30 A Encapsulated Digital Power Modules

Renesas Electronics has announced two new fully encapsulated digital DC/DC PMBus power modules that board high power density and efficiency. The dual ISL8274M operates from a 5 V or 12 V power rail, provides two 30 A outputs and up to 95.5% peak efficiency in a compact 18 mm x 23 mm2 footprint. The new ZL9024M operates from a 3.3V rail and outputs 33 A of power in a 17 mm x19 mm2 footprint. They deliver point-of-load (POL) conversions for advanced FPGAs, DSPs, ASICs and memory used in servers, telecom, datacom, optical networking and storage equipment. Both devices are easy-to-use, PMBus-configurable power supplies that include a controller, MOSFETs, inductor and passives encapsulated inside a module that increases available board space and reduces bill of materials (BOM).

The ISL8274M and ZL9024M digital power modules leverage Renesas’ patented ChargeMode control architecture, which provides the highest efficiencies with better than 90% on most conversions. The power modules also provide a single clock cycle fast transient response to output current load steps common in FPGAs and DSPs that process power bursts. Their compensation-free design keeps the modules stable regardless of output capacitor changes due to temperature, variation or aging. Eliminating the need for an external discrete compensation network also saves board space and additional BOM cost. The ISL8274M supports input voltages from 4.5 V to 1 4V, while the ZL9024M accepts input voltages from 2.75 V to 4 V. Both modules offer adjustable output voltages as low as 0.6 V.

The encapsulated modules use Renesas’ proprietary High Density Array (HDA) package, which offers unmatched electrical and thermal performance through a single-layer conductive substrate that reduces lead inductance and dissipates heat primarily through the system board. The HDA’s copper lead-frame structure allows the modules to operate at full load over a wide temperature range with no airflow or heatsinks. The ISL8274M and ZL9024M also provide several protection features that ensure safe operations under abnormal operating conditions, further enhancing their robustness and reliability.

The ZL9024M is available now in a thermally enhanced 17 mm x 19 mm x 3.5 mm HDA package, and is priced at $29 (1,000s). The ZL9024MEVAL1Z evaluation board is available for $95.

SWIFT DC/DC Buck Converters Reduce EMI

Texas Instruments recently launched the industry’s first 20-A and 30-A synchronous DC/DC buck converters with frequency synchronization for low-noise and reduced EMI/EMC and a PMBus interface for adaptive voltage scaling (AVS). The SWIFT 20-A TPS544B25 and 30-A TPS544C25 converters integrate MOSFETs and feature small PowerStack QFN packages to drive ASICs in space-constrained and power-dense applications. The highly integrated converters feature 0.5% reference-voltage accuracy, as well as full differential remote-voltage sensing. Frequency synchronization to an external clock eliminates beat noise and reduces EMI. Moreover, the TPS544B25 and TPS544C25 offer pin-strapping that enables the devices to start up without PMBus commands to an output voltage set by a single resistor. Programmability, real-time monitoring of the output voltage, current and external temperature, and fault reporting via PMBus simplify power-supply design, increase reliability, and reduce component count and system cost.

Precision Set & Readback PMBus-Compatible µModule Regulator

Linear Technology recently announced the LTM4675 dual 9-A or single 18-A, µModule (micromodule) step-down DC/DC regulator with PMBus serial digital interface. It comes in a 11.9 mm × 16 mm × 3.51 mm BGA package. The I²C-based interface enables you to manage a system’s power condition and consumption. Calibrated and guaranteed from –40°C to 125°C, output DC voltage accuracy is ±0.5% over line and load regulation, and load current readback accuracy is ±2.5% maximum.Linear 4675

The LTM4675—which features EEPROM, power MOSFETs, inductors and supporting components—dual analog control loops and precision mixed-signal circuitry. It is drop-in pin-compatible with the larger package (16 mm × 16 mm BGA) higher power dual 13A LTM4676A, eliminating layout changes so that system designers can easily switch between the devices during the prototype phase. This eliminates redesign of power circuits if power requirements change during board prototyping. The LTM4675 has applications in optical transport systems, datacom and telecom switches and routers, industrial test equipment, robotics, RAID and enterprise systems where energy costs, cooling and maintenance are critical and must be continuously and precisely measured.

The LTM4675 operates from a 4.5-to-17-V input supply and steps down VIN to two outputs ranging from 0.5 to 5.5 V. Two channels can current share to provide up to 18 A (i.e., 9 A + 9 A as one output). Power-up turn-on time is 70 ms. To evaluate the performance of the LTM4675, the free LTpowerPlay GUI-based development system is available for download, and a USB-to-PMBus converter and demo kit are available. With ±0.5% maximum DC output error over temperature, ±2.5% current readback accuracy, integrated 16-bit delta-sigma ADC and EEPROM, the LTM4675 combines best-in-class analog switching regulator performance with precision mixed-signal data acquisition. At start-up, output voltages, switching frequency and channel phase angle assignments can be set by pin-strapping resistors.

The LTM4675 internal operating temperature range is from –40°C to 125°C.  It costs $24 in 1,000-piece units.

Highly Integrated DC/DC Converter with PMBus Digital Interface

Texas Instruments recently introduced a four-channel buck DC/DC converter with PMBus/I2C digital interface for applications in space-constrained equipment. The TPS65400 dual- or quad-output configurable DC/DC converter integrates eight power MOSFETs. The TPS65400 includes four high-current synchronous buck switching regulators with integrated MOSFETs. Each switching converter supplies a 2- or 4-A output to efficiently power digital circuits, such as the processor, FPGA, ASIC, memory and digital input/output. Switching frequency for the converter is independently adjustable up to 2.2 MHz. The TPS65400 can be powered from a single-input voltage rail between 4.5 and 18 V. It supports applications running off a 5- or 12-V intermediate power distribution bus.

The TPS65400’s benefits and key features include:
