Smart Power Switches Meet Automotive Needs

Infineon Technologies offers power IC manufacturing technology: SMART7. Infineon designed it specifically for automotive applications such as Body Control Modules or Power Distribution Centers. SMART7 power ICs drive, diagnose and protect loads in applications like heating, power distribution, air-conditioning, exterior and interior lighting, seat and mirror adjustment. They also provide a cost-effective and robust replacement of electromechanical relays and fuses. SMART7 is based on thin-wafer technology that reduces power losses and chip sizes. Based on SMART7, Infineon has introduced the two high-side power switch families PROFET+2 and High Current PROFET. The SPOC+2 multichannel SPI high-side power controllers will follow within a year.

The PROFET+2 family was developed for automotive 12 V lighting load applications and capacitive loads. These comprise e. g. halogen bulbs in external lighting control, interior lighting and dimming, as well as LED lighting. PROFET+2 devices provide state-of-the-art diagnostics and protection features. They maintain pin-out compatibility with their predecessor family PROFET+ for zero-cost migration. There is no ECU layout change needed, if single-channel devices are replaced by dual-channel variants and vice versa. Compared to their predecessor family, the PROFET+2 devices are up to 40 percent smaller in package size and improve energy efficiency with 50 percent lower current consumption. Their mass production is planned to start as of Q4 2017 and later. All high-side switches will be qualified in accordance with AEC Q100.

Infineon Launches “Productive4.0” Research Project

Infineon Technologies recently launched “Productive4.0,” which is a European research initiative relating to the field of Industry 4.0. More than 100 partners (e.g., Bosch, Philips, Thales, NXP, SAP, ABB, Volvo, Ericsson, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) from 19 European countries are involved in the project which is focused on digitizing and networking industry. Part of the European funding program for microelectronics (ECSEL), the aim of Productive4.0 is to strengthen expertise in microelectronics with a view to broad digitization.Infineon 200mm Fab

Thirty partners from Germany and 79 participants will work together for three years. With €106 million in funding, the aim is to “create a user platform across value chains and industries, that especially promotes the digital networking of manufacturing companies, production machines and products.”

3-D Image Sensor Chips for Virtual Reality

Infineon Technologies AG and pmdtechnologies gmbh recently announced the development of REAL3 3-D image sensor chips for virtual and augmented reality applications, spatial measurement, photo effects, and more. The new sensors have improved optical sensitivity and power comsumption in comparison to the previous version.REAL3_Infineon

Infineon Expands Its 200-V Driver IC Portfolio

Infineon Technologies AG has expanded its 200-V driver IC portfolio with the IRS2005(S, M) for high-voltage, high-speed IGBTs and power MOSFETs. The IC features comprehensive protection for motor drive space-constrained applications (e.g., golf carts and power tools).Infineon IOR_PDIO-8

The IRS200x family comprises high-side and low-side and H-bridge drivers utilizing Infineon’s high-voltage junction isolation (HVJI) technology to realize small packages while remaining tolerant to negative transient voltages. Built for  low-voltage (24 V, 36 V, and 48 V) and mid-voltage (60 V, 80 V, and 100 V) applications, the 200-V devices enable high system level efficiency and power density while providing the necessary robustness.

The IRS200x family consists of six devices with a typical sink current of 600 mA and source current of 290 mA. The 200-V devices are compatible with 3.3-, 5-, and 15-V logic components. Across the family, the driver ICs feature V CC Under Voltage Lock Out (UVLO) while the IRS2005 also includes V BS UVLO, further improving system reliability. The 200V driver ICs are intended for use with bootstrap power supplies, which eliminates the need for large auxiliary power supplies. In addition, the devices include integrated deadtime and shoot-through protection. They feature low quiescent currents. The IRS2004 also features a shutdown input pin.

The 200-V IRS200x driver ICs are offered in eight-pin SOIC, eight-pin DIP or 14-pin 4 × 4 mm MLPQ packages with various logic input options and standard pinout configurations. Production samples of the IRS200x devices are now available.

Infineon Digitizes power for Energy-Efficient LEDs

Infineon Technologies recently announced that it developed a digital platform for power supply with which LED lighting systems can be controlled intelligently, thus making maximum energy savings possible. According to Infineon, with .dp digital power 2.0, development time can be reduced by up to 70%. The ICL8105 and ILD2111 controllers are the two new members of the platform. Infineon-ICL8105

The ICL8105 is a digitally configurable flyback controller with Power Factor Correction (PFC) for constant power LED drivers from 10 to 80 W. Since only a few external components are required, a cost reduction of up to 10% is possible. The controller has powerful algorithms and supports multiple operating modes. Advantages are a high efficiency and power factor correction plus low distortion. This produces a high quality of light with no flickering. The controller has an input for 0 to 10 V dimming; there is no need for an oscillator including power supply. An active burst mode significantly extends the dimming range, while preventing undesirable effects such as flickering or shimmering. To protect the LED driver in case of overtemperature, the ICL8105 automatically reduces the output current in case of overload.

The ILD2111 is a digitally configurable buck controller that’s designed as a constant current source with output current control (backlash) for LED drivers in the range from 10 to 150 W. Thus, the regulator addresses diverse commercial LED applications. Like the ICL8105, the ILD2111 requires only a few external components. The output current can be set easily and accurately by a resistor, and is also compatible with the LEDset interface. The IC provides flicker-free PWM dimming down to 1%. The component automatically selects an operating window in order to optimally regulate different loads, depending on the switching frequency and the ripple of the output current. The output voltage is specified with 15 to 55 VDC. User-configurable features protect the component at undervoltage and overvoltage, short circuits, overcurrent or high temperatures.

Both the ICL8105 and the ILD2111 are available as samples and can be ordered in high volume. Development boards, the .dp Interface Board and the .dp Vision GUI software are offered for both controllers.

New Power MOSFETs Compact, Durable Electrical Appliances

Infineon Technologies recently extended its StrongIRFET Power MOSFET family. The Logic Level StrongIRFETs can be driven directly from a microcontroller, thus saving space and cutting costs. The StrongIRFET family enables high energy efficiency in electric appliances. With the logic level extension, Infineon meets the market’s demand for StrongIRFETs that do not require a stand-alone driver. In the logic level variant the necessary gate-source voltage is reduced to 4.5 V. Thus, you can directly connect the MOSFET with the microcontroller in many applications.

The characteristic performance features include: low on-state resistance (0.52 mΩ typical and 0.97 mΩ maximum) for reduced conduction losses, high current carrying capability for increased power capability, and rugged silicon all make for high system reliability.

New 700-V HVICs Increases System Reliability, Shrink Board Space

Infineon Technologies recently launched a family of rugged, reliable 700-V High-Voltage ICs (HVICs) optimized for solar, power supply, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), welding, and industrial drive applications. The 700-V offering enables designers of high-voltage power stages to simplify their designs while making them more robust.Infineon-700V-HVIC

The new IR7xxxS series of HVICs feature sink/source ratings from 60 to 2,300 mA and utilize PN junction technology. Available in half bridge and high- and low-side configurations, the new HVICs are optimized for 700-V MOSFETs and 650-V IGBTs and offer full driver capability with extremely fast switching speeds to reduce magnetics component count.

Other key features of the new devices include under-voltage lock-out protection for both channels, lower di/dt gate driver for better noise immunity. In addition, the HVICs are tolerant to negative transient voltage dv/dt, offer matched propagation delay for both channels and are 3.3- and 15-V input logic compatible.

The new IR7xxxS series is available in surface-mount (8-SOIC) packages in high volume. The lead-free devices are RoHS-compliant.

HITFET+ Family of Protected Low-Side Switches

Infineon Technologies recently announced the HITFET+ family of protected low-side switches. The HITFET+ family (High Integrated Temperature protected MOSFET) offers a handy feature-set with its diagnosis function, digital status feedback and short-circuit robustness, and controlled slew rate adjustment for easily balancing switching losses and EMC compliance. The HITFET+ family will comprise at least 16 members varying in R DS(on) (10 to 800 MΩ), feature set (i.e., with and without status feedback), and package size (D-PAK with 5 or 3 pins, DSO with 8 pins). HITFET+ products of one package size are completely scalable. You don’t need to change either software or PCB layout to drive various loads. HITFET+ products are suitable as protected drivers in industrial applications, including solar power modules, printers, and vending machines.

As for use in automotive systems, the HITFET+ products can drive solenoids for valve control with PWM up to 20 kHz. They are also a good fit for automotive light-dimming applications. In addition, the HITFET+ family can be useful in a variety other automotive applications, such as the following:

  • mid-size and small-size electric motor drives for door locks or a parking brake
  • injection valves for alternative fuel (LPG, CNG)
  • flaps driving in HVAC
  • rear wheel steering applications

The BTF3050TE is now available in a lead-free TO-252 package (D-PAK 5-pin) in high volume. Additional HITFET+ products are scheduled to be released toward the end of 2015.

New XMC4800 Microcontrollers with EtherCAT Technology Support Industry 4.0

Infineon Technologies AG has launched a new XMC4800 series of 32-bit microcontrollers with on-chip Ethernet for Control Automation Technology (EtherCAT) node. With its real-time capability, the XMC4800 series is intended to drive networked industrial automation and Industry 4.0 applications.Infineon XMC4800

The EtherCAT node is integrated on an ARM Cortex-M-based microcontroller with on-chip flash and analog/mixed signal capability. The XMC4800 series comprises at least 18 members varying in memory capacity, temperature range and packaging. All XMC4800 microcontrollers will be AEC Q100 qualified, making them also suited for use in commercial, construction, and agricultural vehicles.

The XMC4800 series is a member of the XMC4000 family, which uses the ARM Cortex-M4 processor and was specifically developed for use in the automation of manufacturing and buildings as well as electric drives and solar inverters. The XMC4800 series offers a seamless upgrade path to EtherCAT technology with pin and code compatibility to the established XMC4000 microcontrollers. The XMC4800 enables the use of EtherCAT under the harsh condition of up to 125°C ambient temperature.

 

With the integration of the EtherCAT functionality, the XMC4800 enables the most compact design without need for a dedicated EtherCAT ASIC, external memory and clock crystal. It offers a 144-MHz-CPU, up to 2 MB of embedded flash memory, 352 KB of RAM and a comprehensive range of peripheral and interface functions. The peripherals include four parallel fast 12-bit A/D converter modules, two 12-bit D/A converters, four delta sigma demodulator modules, six capture/compare units (CCU4 and CCU8), and two positioning interface modules. In addition to its EtherCAT functionality, its communication functions comprise interfaces for Ethernet, USB, and SD/MMC. Also, the XMC4800 series offers six CAN nodes, six serial communication channels, and one external bus interface for communication. The three package options are LQFP-100, LQFP-144, and LFBGA-196.

Samples of the series XMC4800 with EtherCAT technology will be available in August 2015. Volume production is scheduled for Q1 2016.

OptiMOS Product Family Exceeds 95% Efficiency

Infineon Technologies recently launched the OptiMOS 5 25- and 30-V product family, the next generation of Power MOSFETs in standard discrete packages, a new class of power stages named Power Block, and in an integrated power stage, DrMOS 5×5. Together with Infineon’s driver and digital controller products the company delivers full system solutions for applications such as server, client, datacom or telecom.Infineon-OptiMOS

The newly introduced OptiMOS family offers benchmark solutions with efficiency improvements of around 1% across the whole load range compared to its previous generation, exceeding 95% peak efficiency in a typical server voltage regulator design. This improved performance is based for example on the reduction of switching losses (Q switch) by 50% compared to the previous OptiMOS technology. Thus, implementing the new OptiMOS 25 V would lead to energy savings of 26.3 kWh per year for a single 130-W server CPU working 365 days.

The launch of the OptiMOS product family is accompanied by the introduction of a new packaging technology offering a further reduction in PCB area consumption. It is used in the Power Block product family and in the integrated powerstage DrMOS 5×5 and offers a source down low-side MOSFET for improved thermal performance, with a reduction by 50% of the thermal resistance in comparison to standard package solution, such as SuperSO8.

Infineon`s Power Block is a leadless SMD package comprising the low-side and high-side MOSFET of a synchronous DC/DC converter into a 5.0 × 6.0 mm 2 package outline. With Power Block, customers can shrink their designs up to 85 percent by replacing two separate discrete packages, such as SuperSO8 or SO-8. Both, the small package outline and the interconnection of the two MOSFETs within the package minimize the loop inductance for best system performance.

OptiMOS 5 25V is also used in an integrated power stage, combining DrMOS 5×5, driver and two MOSFETs, for a total area consumption on the PCB equal to 25mm². The integrated driver plus MOSFETs solution results in a shorter design time and is easy to design-in. Additionally, the dovetailed power stage includes a high accurate temperature sense of +/-5°C (compared to +/-10°C of an external one) which enables higher system reliability and performance.

Samples of the new OptiMOS 25- and 30-V devices in SuperSO8, S3O8 and Power Block packages, with on-state resistances from 0.9 mΩ to 3.3 mΩ are available. Additional products with monolithic integrated Schottky-like diode and products in 30 V will be available from Q2 2015 onwards. DrMOS 5×5 will be released in Q2 2015. Samples are available.

Embedded SIM Controllers for Secure M2M Communication

Secure cellular Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication enables automated data exchange. Infineon Technologies recently announced the SLM 97 and SLI 97 security controller families. Lighting and Motor Control Shields for Arduino

Arduino enthusiasts will be excited to learn that Infineon Technologies has announced two new shields for RGB lighting and motor control. You can use the shields—which are compatible to Arduino Uno R3—with the XMC1100 Boot Kit, which is equipped with a 32-bit microcontroller of the XMC1000 family (uses the ARM Cortex-M0 processor).

The RGB LED Lighting Shield for Arduino features an XMC1202 microcontroller with its Brightness Color Control Unit (BCCU) for LED lighting control. The high-current DC Motor Control Shield for Arduino contains the Infineon NovalithIC BTN8982TA integrated half-bridge driver for motor control.

The RGB LED Lighting Shield evaluation board enables you to use different LED light engines for fast prototyping. It has three independent output channels for flicker-free control of multicolor LEDs. The BCCU automated hardware engine provides a cost-effective LED lighting solution dimming and color mixing. You can expand the shield with a DMX interface for lighting and audio nodes or a 24-GHz radar sensor for motion detection.

The DC Motor Control Shield with BTN8982TA simplifies the prototyping of DC motor control designs. It can drive two unidirectional DC motors or one bidirectional DC motor. The shield features two NovalithIC BTN8982TA fully integrated high-current half-bridge drivers optimized for motor drive applications. The BTN8982TA includes three ICs: two power chips (one p-channel high-side MOSFET and one n-channel low-side MOSFET) and an integrated driver IC with one logic circuit to control and monitor the power. Other features include are diagnosis with current sense and slew rate adjustment.

Until end of January 2015, both the RGB Lighting Shield with XMC1202 for Arduino and the DC Motor Control Shield with BTN8982TA for Arduino will be available for purchase from Newark element14. After that, they’ll also be available from Infineon and its distributors.

ARM-based Embedded Power Family for Smart Motor Control

In mid-November 2014, Infineon announced an ARM-based Embedded Power family of bridge drivers offering an unmatched level of integration to address the growing trend towards intelligent motor control for a wide range of automotive applications.  The Embedded Power family offers 32-bit performance in an application space that it is typically associated with 16-bit. Infineon combined its proprietary automotive qualified 130-nm Smart Power manufacturing technology with its vast experience in motor control drivers into the new, highly integrated Embedded Power family, available in a standard QFN package of only 7 mm × 7 mm in dimension. Where previous multi-chip designs needed a standalone microcontroller, a bridge driver, and a LIN transceiver, automotive system suppliers now benefit from motor control designs of minimum external components count. The newly released Embedded Power products reduce the component count down to less than 30, thus allowing integration of all functions and associated external components for the motor control in a PCB area of merely 3 cm². As a result, the Embedded Power family enables the integration of electronics close to the motor for true mechatronic designs.

Both the TLE987x and TLE986x bridge drivers use the ARM Cortex TM-M3 processor. Their peripheral set includes a current sensor, a successive approximation 10-bit ADC synchronized with the capture and compare unit (CAPCOM6) for PWM control and 16-bit timers. A LIN transceiver is integrated to enable communication to the devices along with a number of general-purpose I/Os. Both series include an on-chip linear voltage regulator to supply external loads. Their flash memory is scalable from 36 to 128 KB. They operate from 5.4 V up to 28 V. An integrated charge pump enables low-voltage operation using only two external capacitors. The bridge drivers feature programmable charging and discharging current. The patented current slope control technique optimizes the system EMC behavior for a wide range of MOSFETs. The products can withstand load dump conditions up to 40 V while maintaining an extended supply voltage operating down to 3.0V where the microcontroller and the flash memory are fully functional.

The TLE987x series of bridge drivers addresses three-phase (BLDC) motor applications such as fuel pumps, HVAC blowers, engine cooling fans, and water pumps. It supports sensor-less and sensor-based (including field-oriented control) BLDC motor applications addressed by LIN or controlled via PWM.

The TLE986x series is optimized to drive two-phase DC motors by integrating four NFET drivers. The TLE986x series is suitable for applications such as sunroofs, power window lifts and generic smart motor control via NFET H-Bridge.

Engineering samples of the TLE987x and TLE986x bridge drivers in a space-saving VQFN-48 package are available with volume production planned to start in Q1 2015. For both series, there are several derivatives available, differing for example in system clock (24 MHz or 40 MHz) and flash sizes.
