Renesas RL78 Green Energy Challenge Contest Overview
Participants are challenged to design a unique application (“Project”) that must use the Renesas RL78 MCU, RL78/G13 Renesas Demonstration Kit (“RDK”) and IAR Toolchain for developing a unique, energy-efficient and eco-friendly device. In order to be eligible to compete in the Contest, each Participant must meet all qualifications set forth in these Official Rules and any related policies. These Official Rules will control over any conflicting provisions in any policies. Certain materials will be provided by Renesas as further described below. In the event that Participants elect to purchase additional materials, Renesas shall in no way be responsible for reimbursing Participants for that or any other costs. The Project must use commercially available components only. The object/executable code must be created with the IAR Toolchain, must be able to be re-created by a third party and must compile without error. All Participants must use the Renesas RL78 Green Energy Challenge ("Contest") Registration Form to register for this Contest and obtain an assigned Project Registration Number for labeling Entries (defined below).
The term “Entry” refers to the Project Abstract, Complete Documentation, and Source Code collectively (e.g., all together in one ZIP file). Each Entry must be clearly marked with the Project Registration Number. To submit an Entry, Participants must upload their Project files to the Contest Dropbox.
Incomplete, illegible, or defaced Entries will be rejected. If entering multiple Entries, there must be a separate Registration Form and individual Project Registration Number assigned for each Entry. Prior publication or the prior Internet posting of essential components in an Entry are not grounds for disqualification.
The publication rights described herein refer only to the actual materials submitted as the Entry and not the entire Project. All winning Projects will be posted (electronic/Internet media) at the discretion of the Contest Administrator and Contest Sponsor. All Participants agree to sign a separate agreement granting to the Contest Sponsor and Contest Administrator the right to publish (in print or electronic/Internet media) the submitted or extracted abstract or documentation (including the block diagram, textual description, photograph, schematic, and software code sample) for use in a publishable abstract and in promotional materials unrelated to the Contest.
Registration for this Contest is required. All Participants must receive a Project Registration Number for labeling their Entries. A confirmation email will be sent with an assigned Project Registration Number. This number is used to identify the specific Project being submitted and must be included on/attached to all Entry documentation and to any correspondence.

How to Win the Contest
Judging shall fall into two distinct areas: judging for Renesas Grand Prizes and judging for Partner Prizes. Participants in this Contest, eligible for Renesas Grand Prizes, must use the RDK or RL78 MCU and IAR Toolchain to design an energy-efficient and eco-friendly device. Both hardware- and software-based applications are acceptable. The Entries will be judged equally on energy efficiency and design optimization, technical merit, originality, usefulness, and cost-effectiveness of the RDK and RL78 MCU. Participants in the Weekly Challenges, eligible for Partner Prizes, must submit their answers through Renesas’s Twitter and Facebook feeds. All correct answers will be pooled and winners of Weekly Challenges drawn at random.
Judging for Renesas Grand Prize:
All Entries will be judged by a panel of four (4) judges selected by the Contest Administrator, Circuit Cellar/Elektor. Each Entry shall be scored based on the criteria listed below with a maximum possible judge’s score of 100.
- Energy Efficiency and Design Optimization – 20%. The design helps to save energy, has been developed as a low-power application, or will help to improve the planet.
- Technical Merit – 20%. The design uses many of the capabilities of the RL78 MCU, supporting hardware and software to their highest value.
- Originality – 20%. The design has concepts or ideas which have either never been done before OR makes use of existing concepts and improves upon them using the capabilities of Renesas RL78 MCU.
- Cost Effectiveness – 20%. The design maximizes the Renesas RL78 MCU and requires a minimum of external devices and/or support electronics.
- Usefulness – 20%. The design is practical and useful in some form of product or demonstration of technology.
In the event of a tie, the Entry which the judges determine has the most unique project design will be the winner. In the event of a further tie, the Entry with the highest score in technical merit will be selected.
Contest judges have been chosen based on their familiarity with engineering design, Renesas component knowledge, and experience. Participants agree to abide by all decisions of the Contest Administrator, which shall be final and binding with respect to all issues relating to the Contest.
For the names of the prize winners, available after October 30, 2012, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:
RL78 Green Energy Challenge, 2880 Scott Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95050.
Judging for Partner Prizes:
Contest Partners shall judge based entirely on their own criteria, but may use the Renesas judging criteria at their own discretion. Scores awarded by Renesas judges for Renesas Grand Prizes shall not influence Partner judging or awarding of Partner prizes.
For details on Renesas Grand Prizes and Partner Prizes, click here to view the Prize Page. The odds of winning the Renesas Grand Prizes depend on the number of acceptable Entries received in the Contest and the decision of the Contest Administrator and judges. The odds of winning the Partner Prizes depend on the number of correct responses received each week. The Grand Prizes will be awarded and mailed to the winners. The Contest Sponsor is solely responsible for the payment of all Renesas Grand Prizes. Upon delivery to the winner's address, the Contest Sponsor will be deemed to have awarded the Renesas Grand Prize to the winner with the winner assuming full responsibility for the Renesas Grand Prize. There will be no substitution for prizes (“prizes” referring to Renesas Grand Prize and Partner Prizes) other than as offered. Each winner, and not the Contest Administrator or the Contest Sponsor, is solely responsible for all other arrangements, costs and expenses associated with receiving their prize, including without limitation, any taxes or other fees imposed by a government authority. All Participants and winners agree that signing the Contest Registration Form or otherwise registering online via e-mail constitutes agreement to the terms and conditions of the Entry rules. Renesas Grand Prize Winners will be required to sign an additional liability waiver and statement of eligibility before receiving any Renesas Grand Prize. Winners will be notified by mail, e-mail, and/or telephone. The Contest Administrator’s decision is final. If a winner fails to respond within seven (7) days of notification, an alternate winner will be selected. Prizes are not transferable.
In the event of a dispute, potential winners may be required to provide proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the potentially winning Entry.
